An injury that a robin could recover from — a bruised wing, a cracked bill — can be functionally fatal for a hummingbird, since it needs to feed roughly every 15 to 20 minutes throughout daylight hours just to maintain its metabolism. None of this has anything to do with a bird being sick, old, or careless. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimates that over a billion birds die from window strikes in the United States every year — a figure that traces back to peer-reviewed research estimating a range of 365 to 988 million annually, with the majority of those deaths happening at low-rise buildings and ordinary homes, not skyscrapers.

What actually prevents it

The American Bird Conservancy's updated guidance is specific to small birds: a 2-inch-by-2-inch spacing standard, replacing the older 2-by-4-inch rule specifically because that wider spacing "in order to protect hummingbirds which are uniquely vulnerable to window strikes." Cornell Lab's All About Birds confirms the same standard independently. A single hawk silhouette centered on a picture window doesn't meet that bar; birds simply fly around it, because the open space on either side still reads as a clear path through. The pattern has to cover the glass, not decorate one corner of it.

Getting real protection without a wall of dots

A full 2-inch grid is a lot of visual coverage, and it's fair to want your windows to still look like windows. The material choice that actually solves this — rather than just making the pattern less noticeable — is UV-reflective decals. Because hummingbirds and most other birds see into the ultraviolet spectrum and humans don't, a properly spaced UV pattern can sit at true 2-inch density and still read as ordinary clear glass to anyone standing in your kitchen.

One thing worth checking before buying any decal product: many are marketed around the older "4 inches by 2 inches" version of the American Bird Conservancy's spacing guidance. This isn't a recommendation to put feeders near your windows — the window treatment above is the real fix. But if a feeder already sits close to glass, or you're not able to move it far away, it's worth knowing there's real research on which distances are worse. In a controlled field study, ornithologist Daniel Klem and colleagues moved feeders to set distances from windows and recorded every strike that followed. The result: no fatalities were recorded when feeders sat within about 3 feet of the glass, while mortality rose sharply once feeders were moved out to 16 and 33 feet. The logic matches the physics: a bird taking off from a feeder that close hasn't had room to reach full flight speed, so even a strike is far less likely to be fatal. Don't mistake this for a green light, though. Windows near feeders still see more collisions than any other glass in a home, close feeder or not — closer changes how severe a strike is, not how often one happens. Treating the window with the 2-inch spacing pattern above is what actually prevents the strike in the first place; feeder distance only matters for the cases that treatment doesn't catch.

One more thing worth knowing: you'll sometimes see advice that placing a feeder far away — 20, 30, even more feet from the house — is the safer choice. Does it help to offset the feeder to the side of the window?

This isn't something we've seen directly tested, so take it as reasoning rather than a verified rule — but it follows the same logic the American Bird Conservancy already applies to yard landscaping. Sheppard specifically advises against walkways, hedges, or other features that create a straight "funnel" leading a bird right at a window. A feeder positioned slightly to the side of a window, rather than centered directly in front of it, follows that same reasoning: it doesn't give a bird a straight flight line into the glass, even from close range. It's a reasonable extra step, just not one we can point to a dedicated study for.

Not the Only Risk to Watch For

Window strikes aren't caused by a predator, but they belong in the same conversation — sometimes the real danger to a hummingbird isn't an animal at all. In the largest published study of hummingbird rehabilitation admissions, window collisions were the second most common identifiable cause, right behind interactions with cats — but neither was actually the single biggest reason birds needed help.
