William "Pops" Sloan
Inventor of the Original Hummingbird Swing™
Pops made the first hummingbird swings by hand for friends and neighbors. Pop's Birding carries his name and his idea.
Inviting wonder is what we're all about. It started with William "Pops" Sloan, who loved the hummingbirds in his backyard so much that he made them a little swing: a comfortable place to rest near their food, and a front-row seat for everyone watching.
Today we're a family business in Idaho Falls, Idaho, sharing that same joy with hummingbird lovers everywhere, with products made in the USA, friendly advice and free guides to help your backyard become a little more wonderful.
Pops loved watching the hummingbirds in his backyard, and the wonder and joy they brought him. After watching one rest on a twig near his feeder, he made the first hummingbird swing by hand, a birch dowel wrapped in wire, and shared it with family and neighbors. Everyone called him Pops.
In 2008 the family set out to bring his idea to market in his honor. It started as Pop's Hummingbird Swings, Bethany Sloan has owned and led the company since 2010, and in 2021 it moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho. Today you'll find Pop's across the US and Canada.
Our mission: Pop's Birding is dedicated to helping people attract, understand, and enjoy hummingbirds through innovative products, practical education, and years of hands-on experience.
Pops invented the first hummingbird swing. Every Pop's swing has our patented Polyperch®, shaped like the branches hummingbirds look for in nature.
