Homemade Nectar: 1 Part Sugar to 4 Parts Water

This is the standard ratio for DIY nectar. Per Cornell Lab's All About Birds, natural flower nectar is roughly comparable to a quarter to a third cup of sugar per cup of water — a quarter cup (1:4) is the safe upper limit in hot, dry weather, while a slightly stronger mix, up to about a third cup (1:3), is fine in cold, rainy conditions, since it lowers the nectar's freezing point and adds calories when birds need extra energy. Don't go stronger than 1:3 — an overly concentrated mix can be harder for hummingbirds to digest and doesn't provide enough water content for their needs.

Note: a "part" is just whatever unit you choose — a cup, an ounce, a tablespoon. As long as you use the same unit for both ingredients, the ratio holds at any batch size.

Why the Ratios Differ Between Products

It comes down to how concentrated each product already is. Nectarlyte is a dry powder, so it needs a larger volume of water added to reach the right final sugar concentration — the same 1:4 logic as plain sugar. Nectarade Concentrate is already a liquid with a higher starting concentration, so it needs proportionally less added water (1:2) to land at that same roughly 20–25% final sugar concentration that matches natural nectar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use red dye or food coloring in hummingbird nectar? No. Red dye isn't necessary — hummingbirds are drawn to red feeder parts, not red nectar — and dyes may be harmful to their health. Clear nectar is both safer and sufficient.

Can I use honey or artificial sweeteners instead of sugar? No. Honey ferments quickly and can promote dangerous fungal growth, and artificial sweeteners provide no real nutritional value for hummingbirds. Plain white granulated sugar is the only ingredient that safely replicates natural flower nectar.

Should the water be warm or cold when mixing? Warm water dissolves sugar or powder faster and more completely, which is why it's recommended for mixing. Once fully dissolved, let the nectar cool to room temperature before filling a feeder.

Does the ratio change for different hummingbird species? No. The 1:4 sugar-to-water ratio (or equivalent for Pop's products) matches the general sugar concentration found in flower nectar across hummingbird species — no need to adjust by species.

Is tap water safe to use? Yes, in most areas. If your tap water is heavily chlorinated or you're concerned about quality, filtered or bottled water works too — just avoid distilled water for regular use, since it lacks trace minerals.
