What's in Nectarlyte®

Pure cane sugar with a few simple additions, and nothing artificial. Nectar is fuel; insects supply the protein, so pair your feeder with native flowers that bring both.

  • Pure cane sugarNo dyes and no preservatives.
  • Potassium chlorideA mineral salt. Flower nectar naturally carries trace salts like this.
  • Calcium carbonateResearchers have watched nesting females eat calcium-rich soil and grit; adding calcium is Pop's reasoning, built on that.

How much nectar do I need?

Fill your feeder only as full as the birds will finish before the next change: every 2–3 days in normal weather, every 1–2 days when it's 90°F or hotter. Here's roughly what that adds up to.

Bring them closer

Build a hummingbird sanctuary

  1. Hang it in the right spot

Hang it 4–6 feet high, with morning sun and afternoon shade, near a tree or shrub for cover. Pick a spot you can see from a window. See the placement guide.

  2. Give them a place to rest

Pop's rule of thumb: hang a hummingbird swing about 1 foot from the feeder, at the same height, so they have a comfortable place to rest beside their food.

  3. Add cover and flowers

Choose a sheltered spot near tall flowering shrubs, so they have somewhere to retreat and natural nectar close by. Pop's wildflower seed mix is an easy start.

  4. Keep the nectar fresh

Change nectar every 2–3 days in normal weather, every 1–2 days when it's 90°F or hotter, and right away if it turns cloudy. Pop's nectar adds calcium and electrolytes.

Our story

It started with one swing

Captivated by the mystique and originality of the hummingbird, William “Pops” Sloan began the quest to invite more wonder into the lives of birders everywhere, so everyone could experience the joy and awe of a hummingbird sighting firsthand. Thus, the hummingbird swing was born.

Our mission: Pop's Birding is dedicated to helping people attract, understand, and enjoy hummingbirds through innovative products, practical education, and decades of hands-on experience.

Powder nectar questions

The things bird lovers ask us most.

Mixing Nectarlyte® powder

How do I mix the powder?

Mix 1 part Nectarlyte® powder with 4 parts warm water and stir until it dissolves. A "part" is any measure you like: 1 tablespoon of powder with 4 tablespoons of warm water, or 1/4 cup with 1 cup. Mix only what your feeder holds. The Nectar Change Calculator has batch sizes.

How much nectar does a bag make?

The 8 oz bag makes over 1 liter (about 34 fl oz) of nectar. The 2 lb bag makes over 1 gallon.

Which size should I choose?

The 8 oz bag is a good way to try Pop's nectar or keep one feeder going. The 2 lb bag is the best value for a whole season or several feeders. See How much nectar do I need? above.

What's in Nectarlyte®?

Pure cane sugar with two simple additions, potassium chloride and calcium carbonate. No dyes and no preservatives.

Powder or liquid: what's the difference?

Nectarlyte® powder is the most compact and you mix only what you need. Nectarade® is a liquid, either Concentrate (1 part to 2 parts water) or Ready to Use. See the liquid nectar.

Freshness

How often should I change the nectar?

Change nectar every 2–3 days in normal weather, every 1–2 days when it's 90°F or hotter, and right away if it turns cloudy.

How long does the powder keep?

Sealed, it's guaranteed for 3 years when stored in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Once mixed, refrigerate any extra in a sealed container and use it within about a week. How long nectar lasts.

Do I need red dye?

No. Hummingbirds are drawn to the red parts of a feeder, not red nectar. Pop's nectar has no dyes.

Subscribe & save

How does Subscribe & save work?

Your first order ships now. Choose how often you’d like a delivery, and you save 10% on every one. We email you 3 days before each order.

Can I skip, pause or cancel?

Yes, at any time. Sign in to your account, open your subscription, and choose Skip, Pause or Cancel.

What about winter?

Pause your subscription when the birds leave and resume it when they come back, right from your account. Nothing ships while it’s paused. Take feeders down about two weeks after your last sighting: when to take feeders down.

When are hummingbirds around where I live?

It depends on where you live. See our state hummingbird guides for when they usually arrive and leave.
