Description

Most hummingbird feeders treat the perch as an afterthought — a place for you to watch, not somewhere a hummingbird actually wants to rest. Pop's AspenPerch® Feeder is different: its patented Polyperch® perching surface is engineered to mimic the slender perches hummingbirds grip in the wild, giving them a comfortable place to sit while they feed.

The perch also sits in a smarter spot. The Grandview™ perch sits above an open bowl instead of beside a port, so hummingbirds rest in a higher, more natural position and lean forward to drink. You get a clear, face-on view of every visit and watch the tongue work, not a bird's back.

Hummingbirds spend a large share of the day perched — about three-quarters of their waking hours in classic studies, less when food is scarce — and they like to rest near good food and guard it from nearby perches. See what the research on hummingbird perching shows. The AspenPerch® feeder and our line of Hummingbird Swings are built around that behavior: a comfortable place to sit, right beside the food.

Pests like ants and bees can deter hummingbirds from visiting your feeder — which is why the AspenPerch® includes an ant moat built into the frame and compatibility with Pop's Hummguard® Nectar Tips (sold separately) for protection from flying insects.

Made in the USA and backed by Pop's Limited Lifetime Warranty. Each feeder includes a threaded brass hanger, instruction sheet, and tips for building your own hummingbird sanctuary.

Hang it 4–6 feet high, with morning sun and afternoon shade, near a tree or shrub for cover. Keep the feeder clean. Change nectar every 2–3 days in normal weather, every 1–2 days when it's 90°F or hotter, and right away if it turns cloudy.

Bring them closer

Build a hummingbird sanctuary

  1. Hang it in the right spot

Hang it 4–6 feet high, with morning sun and afternoon shade, near a tree or shrub for cover. Pick a spot you can see from a window. See the placement guide.

  2. Give them a place to rest

Pop's rule of thumb: hang a hummingbird swing about 1 foot from the feeder, at the same height, so they have a comfortable place to rest beside their food.

  3. Add cover and flowers

Choose a sheltered spot near tall flowering shrubs, so they have somewhere to retreat and natural nectar close by. Pop's wildflower seed mix is an easy start.

  4. Keep the nectar fresh

Change nectar every 2–3 days in normal weather, every 1–2 days when it's 90°F or hotter, and right away if it turns cloudy. Pop's nectar adds calcium and electrolytes.

AspenPerch® feeder questions

The things bird lovers ask us most.

Using your AspenPerch®

How much nectar does the AspenPerch® feeder hold?

8 oz. You fill it by lifting the cover, with no other parts to take apart.

Is the AspenPerch® feeder leak-proof?

Yes. AspenPerch® is designed to be leak-proof, reducing mess and wasted nectar.

Is the AspenPerch® feeder dishwasher safe?

Yes, on the top rack. It comes apart in 2 pieces plus the brass rod, so cleaning is simple.

How often should I change the nectar?

Change nectar every 2–3 days in normal weather, every 1–2 days when it's 90°F or hotter, and right away if it turns cloudy.

Where should I hang my AspenPerch® feeder?

For best results, hang it 4–6 feet high, with morning sun and afternoon shade, and within 10–15 feet of a tree or shrub for cover. See our full placement guide for details.

Why aren't hummingbirds visiting my feeder?

The most common causes are incorrect nectar ratio, poor placement, spoiled nectar, or no nearby perch. It may take a while for them to find a new feeder. See our full troubleshooting guide for a complete checklist.

When should I take my feeder down?

Take feeders down about two weeks after you last see a hummingbird. When to put feeders up and take them down.

Ants, bees & wasps

Does AspenPerch® come with ant and bee protection?

AspenPerch® has a built-in ant moat to keep ants out. Bee guards are not built in: if bees or wasps become a problem, add Pop's Hummguard® tips to the feeder cover. They're sold separately.

The perch

What is the Grandview™ perch?

It's Pop's elevated perch, set above the bowl so hummingbirds feed in a natural forward-leaning posture while you watch them face-on as they lap nectar.

What makes the Polyperch® design different from a standard perch?

Polyperch® is shaped and textured like the branches hummingbirds look for in nature and sized for hummingbird posture, unlike the basic perch rings found on most saucer feeders.

Do hummingbirds need a perch to feed comfortably?

Hummingbirds can hover to feed, but they spend a large share of the day perched, about three-quarters of their waking hours in classic studies, resting near good food and guarding it from nearby perches. A feeder or nearby swing with a comfortable perch gives them a place to do that where you can see them.

How is AspenPerch® different from other perch-style saucer feeders?

Most feeders treat the perch as a viewing convenience for you. AspenPerch's Polyperch® platform is designed around hummingbird posture and comfort, the same thinking behind Pop's Original Hummingbird Swing™.

Made in the USA & warranty

Is AspenPerch® made in the USA, and what's the warranty?

Yes, AspenPerch® is 100% Made in the USA and backed by Pop's Limited Lifetime Product Workmanship Warranty, which covers manufacturing defects, plus our 14-Day Satisfaction Guarantee.
